Philadelphia's Magic Gardens
|
Created by mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens is a Philly art gallery unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Having devoted himself to beautifying Philadelphia’s south street neighbourhood since the 1960s, Zagar has helped to revitalize the area by renovating abandoned buildings and applying his mosaic art to their walls both public and private.
Begun in 1994 in a 3000 square foot vacant lot near Zagar’s studio, the Magic Gardens were assembled over the course of fourteen years, which included the excavation of grottos and tunnels underneath the property. The sheer scope and complexity of the project paid off in 2008, when the gallery first opened to the public.

Covering half a city block, the “gardens” actually feature no plant life at all, and are instead completely covered in Zagar’s mosaic creations. In addition to his hand-made tiles and mirrors, the mosaics themselves are constructed from discarded objects and community contributions which Zagar managed to fuse together, truly making the Magic Gardens a sight to behold in terms of Philly art.
The grounds feature a fully-mosaiced indoor gallery as well as an enormous outdoor mosaic labyrinth, completely engulfing you in Zagar’s work. The works within Philadephia's Magic Gardens acknowledge his many artistic influences, and pay tribute to his family through light-hearted images and words.
