Philadelphia Pro Sports Teams

In addition to having a rich cultural history, Philadelphia is also home to some of the nation’s most beloved sports franchises. Baseball, Basketball, American Football and Ice Hockey are all represented on the professional level, with the four respective teams playing within a mile of each other at the purpose-built South Philadelphia Sports Complex.  Here’s a breakdown of the teams:

Philadelphia Pro Sports Teams - Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies (Baseball)

Winners of both the 1980 and 2008 MLB World Series, the Philadelphia Phillies have the distinction of being the oldest continuous franchise in the history of professional American sports, and play in the National League’s Eastern Division. Since its founding in 1883, the team has undergone two name changes, having been originally called the “Quakers” and subsequently, the “Philadelphias”. Indicating the team’s proud fan base is the fact that Philadelphians overwhelmingly voted the Phillies’ 2008 World Series Title as the “greatest moment in Philadelphia sports history”. They currently play at Citizens Bank Park in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.

Philadelphia Pro Sports Teams - Flyers

Philadelphia Flyers (Hockey)

Competitors in the NHL’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division, the Philadelphia Flyers have the second best all-time points average in the history of the NHL (beaten only by the Montreal Canadiens).  Established in 1967, they were the first team to win the Stanley Cup that was not one of the Original Six NHL franchises. Though they have not won the cup since 1976, they came extremely close in 2010 when they were edged out by the Chicago Blackhawks 4-2 in the final series. They currently play at the Wells Fargo Center in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.

Philadelphia Pro Sports Teams - Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles (Football)

Founded in 1933 by businessman Burt Bell (who would later go on to become NFL Commissioner), the Philadelphia Eagles compete in the East Division of the NFL’s National Football Conference.  Though they have won three NFL titles, they have yet to achieve a Super Bowl victory. Eagles fans are known as some of the most loyal and devoted in the United States, having filled 99.8% of the seats at their games from 1996-2006.  They currently play at Lincoln Financial Field in the South Philadelphia Sports Complex.

Philadelphia Pro Sports Teams - 76ers

Philadelphia 76ers (Basketball)

Featuring a rich history of star players and three NBA Championships, the Philadelphia 76ers are one of the oldest professional basketball franchises in existence, having originally been established as the “Syracuse Nationals” in 1946.  After moving to Philadelphia and changing their name in 1963, they went on to acquire some of the game’s most iconic players including Wilt Chamberlain, Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson. Though they have not made it to the finals since 2001, they still continue to remain an influential force in the NBA. They currently play at the Wells Fargo Center, which they share with the Flyers.
